Change to “Grab-and-Go” Lunch and Snack Program for Students Effective April 6 Five days of meals will be distributed two times per week FOREST CITY, April 2, 2020 — The Forest City Community School District announces a change to the “Grab-and-Go” lunch and snack program distribution schedule. Beginning Monday, April 6, five days of meals will be distributed two times per week to the same six pick-up locations. The two pick-up days will be Monday and Wednesday. The overall goal of the change is to reduce the number of times families and students need to venture out to pick up meals. The Monday pickup will include lunches and snacks for Monday and Tuesday and the Wednesday pickup will include lunches and snacks for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The Grab-and-Go lunch and snack program began on March 23, 2020. The State allowed the Summer Food Program, which is a free program, to go into effect during the period of time when the school district is shut down due to COVID-19. Now in the second week of the program, the district is serving about 270 meals per day. “Our Food Service Director, Glenda Keough, and her staff are doing an incredible job along with our transportation staff,” said superintendent Darwin Lehmann. “We’re learning along the way and we feel this change will better serve families and students as it reduces the number of times people have to go out and this also better aligns with the social distancing guidelines.” Students can pick up free lunches and snacks if they are able to do so on their own. Parents or guardians are now able to pick up meals without their children present due to a change that was announced by the State shortly after the program became available. “Everything is going very well. We enjoy seeing children and caregivers even though it’s for a brief minute,” said Keough. “I do want to remind everyone that it is a requirement that meals are not consumed at any of the pick-up locations. Also, to keep everyone safe, we ask that children are reminded to avoid physical contact with those who are distributing the meals.” Any questions should be directed to Glenda Keough at gkeough@forestcity.k12.ia.us. |
